About-us
The imperial scheme of social security in the name of Employees’ State Insurance was introduced on 02-10-1966 in the Union Territory of Puducherry. At present the employees working in coverable units whose wages within wage ceiling of Rs. 21,000/- per month, avail generally both the kind and cash benefits being offered under the Scheme. The Scheme now stands fully implemented in the entire Union Territory. In this State the Deputy Director (ESI Scheme), Government of Puducherry is looking after the medical arrangements.
The disbursement of cash benefits is made through Five Branch Offices in Puducherry District & One Branch Office in Karaikal District of ESI Corporation. The functioning of these Branch Offices is monitored by the Regional Office. Regional Office engages in identifying the employer / coverable units, all coverable employees into the social security umbrella and successfully implements the scheme. Educational Institutions which attract coverage as per Sec.1(5) have been brought under the fold of ESI Scheme with effect from 12.07.2005. This will add a new feather in the crown of ESIC, particularly in the achievement of Puducherry Region.
Formation of Separate Regional Office
The Standing Committee of the ESI Corporation, in its meeting held on 23-06-2003, passed a Resolution for setting up of a separate Regional Office for the U.T. of Puducherry. It was mentioned in the Agenda that such a step would “bring better results in terms of provision of benefits for the insured persons and better services to the employers”.
On the basis of the said resolution, a new Regional Office came into existence on 04-08-2003. It was initially functioning from the Regional Office, Chennai. With effect from 01-12-2003, it is functioning from Puducherry.
